Puppies-they are a lot of work!

It takes a lot of time and energy to raise a puppy. They sure are cute, but did anyone tell you about their shark teeth? Ouch! How do you make sure they aren’t going to keep biting you when they grow up? And socialization…how do you provide the right exposure to kids, cats, cars, trucks, vet visits, other dogs, all sorts of people, swimming, breweries, bikes, car rides when all you want them to do is pee and poop outside?

What is the right kind of socialization?

You probably read about the importance of properly socializing your new pup. According to the American Veterinary Association of Animal Behavior

“Incomplete or improper socialization during this important time can increase the risk of behavioral problems later in life including fear, avoidance, and/or aggression.”

These are the dogs I see in my behavior practice. They can be the sweetest dogs in their home but have levels of behavior issues that make everyday things like going for a walk around the block or visiting relative’s house really hard. With proper socialization, many of these issues would have been addressed or never appeared.

The most important thing is to provide different experiences for your pup AT THEIR SPEED! I cannot emphasize this enough. It’s respecting your particular puppy’s feelings. If they are hesitant, that’s fine. Let them take their time. Try again tomorrow. Forcing a pup to do something or continuing, even though your pup is obviously frightened, in the name of socialization can lead to a more fearful puppy. They trust you to help them through scary things. Be that person who can help them.

If you have any concerns or questions, schedule a Zoom session, home visit or training center visit here. We prioritize puppy appointments, so if you don’t see an appointment available within the next 3-4 weeks, email wayne@highfidelitydogs.com to schedule an urgent appointment.

Click here to read the AVAAB position statement on socializing puppies before they have received their final vaccinations.

“In general, puppies can start puppy socialization classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming. They should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class

We require for all our pups:

  1. At least one vaccination for distemper and parvo virus. Look for a vaccine called a DA2PP  on your vet record.

  2. Bordetella vaccination. Sometimes listed as a kennel cough vaccine.

  3. A fecal test result. This MUST be from your vet's office. Sorry, but we cannot accept results from a breeder or rescue’s vet. Sometimes vet offices will provide a receipt that it has been done-we need  the actual test results.

  4. Puppies over 16 weeks old need a Rabies vaccine (or at least be scheduled for one) and at least two of the distemper/parvo combo shots.

It's a good idea to start asking your vet for copies of all records and test results for your files now ;^)

We take your puppy's health seriously. In addition to making sure all pups are updated on appropriate vaccines, we have an extensive cleaning and sanitizing protocol.

YOur puppy’s Customized training and socialization program

Every puppy is different. Some pups love people so much, they need help being taught other behaviors besides jumping on people. Others are a little shy and need to have great experiences at their own pace for a boost of confidence. We work with you to design a program just for your puppy. With a combination of training, introducing everyday handling like being comfortable with paws, ears, and tail being touched and exposures to other social puppies and friendly adult dogs, your pup will have a blast while learning. We also have puppies explore different surfaces and obstacles for confidence and fun!
